I give my dog glucosame for exactly the same reason. He has patella luxation in both back knees and does agility as well as a number of other dog sports. He is 6 years old and 7.8 pounds. I try to keep him in good muscle tone and thin to reduce the stress on his joints.

I use consequin as it is the only supplment on the market that has been tested for its effectivness. However, these tests are based on dogs who already have arthitic changes. There's no evidence one way or the other as to whether supplmenting glucosomine before a dog develops arthritis will prevent it from occuring. Since its a nutricel without any known side effects, other than the impact to your wallet, I say, why not?

Other things you may want to investigate:
condroiten (sp?) - already in cosequin
MSM
Penna muscle
A product call "DGP" - Dog Gone Pain
A product called "Conquer K9"

The latter two products are anti-inflammatory.
