here is a suggestion.. ask him to write down on paper what this is or what you want to know and use the online translator. there are lots of them for free use. and you can go in with your questions already in his language then bring home the results to read.
kind of a genaric way to do it but it will get it done.
i kind of feel the same way around here sometimes. mostly spanish and i don't know a lick of it.
