My Chester used to do the same thing; turns out it was a yeast infection, which is what caused the smell. He would get it in his paws. Don't anybody freak out - PLEASE - but an old country vet told me to mix one part bleach with 9 parts water and dip his paws into it - worked like a charm. She did say, however, not to dip his entire body in it. I truly don't remember what we did for the rest of him, as I spent nearly $2500.00 in two years bringing him back to normal after being neglected by his previous owners. Best of luck to you.
