A pyometria can be an open or closed pyometria. An open pyometria isn't quite as dangerous as the infection can actually drain and you will see pus or a white cloudy discharge that will also have an odour to it smells like an infection.
A closed pyometria is dangerous as the infection is not draining and you don't see a discharge as it is contained in the uterus. The infection can become rampant very quickly.
In both cases, immediate Vet care is a necessity.
I have had a pyometria happen twice, two different bitches in my 10 years in yorkies. Both were open pyometrias but I didn't mess with either, they were in the Vets, put on antibiotics and spayed.
Although not quite a year of age is young for a pyo it isn't unheard of.
