Don't know if this helps but I was once told by a trainer that a spooked dog actually runs in big loops and naturally circles back on it's track and only pushes further a field if it is spooked again. Maddie is so small and if she is scared she may be hidding relatively close by under or behind something (in a small space) and may not come out unless something scares her to run off again.
