I don't think the question is whether or not spanking works. The question is: WHY SPANK?
Spanking, more often than not, does work. I won't argue that. {With one exception: housetraining. Spank a dog for eliminating in the house and what often happens is that the dog still eliminates in the house, but he is careful to hide from you when he is doing it.}
BUT, the same lessons can be taught using positive methods. There is absolutely no need to spank.
