Well, we took Simba and Pepe to Yosemite last year when Simba was about 6 month old. We didn't camp though but stayed in a cabin. The dogs loved running through the woods- I think they had a better time than we did. I always kept an eye on them but they never strayed or went away far. It also depends where you camp and what kind of wildlive is there, for example we didn't do a certain hike because there was a warning that a coyote had tried to snatch up a dog, etc.
I think as long as you watch him a little you will be fine. We had a great time.
