I have FOUR hawks living in the woods behind my house--all of them are either on the endangered list or in danger of becoming endangered, so to have them living here is actually a good thing. We have a park ranger who drives through the neighborhood from time to time to check on the wildlife, and once I mentioned the hawks and my Yorkie. He suggested that I always keep him leashed, even in my own back yard--don't let him wander too far from me or the hawks will think they have an opportunity. One day we were in the pool and Google was in his play yard right next to the pool, and the biggest hawk was circling and screeching so I scooped him up and ran into the house. The park ranger said the hawk was probably more interested, at that moment, as what looked like a big supply of fresh water and was screeching because with me in there he couldn't get at it; but it was very good I brought Google in anyway. The big one has a wingspan of nearly FIVE FEET and if it wanted to, could actually seriously injure a full-grown person! The park ranger said when that one is circling close to my pool it's best to simply pick up and go inside. It's nearly as big as an eagle! We also get an occasional turkey vulture while they are in transit from one area to another (they don't nest here) and the last time I saw them (ther were two) they were waiting for a hawk to finish dining on a wild rabbit (the rabbit was almost as big as Google). I took a photo of them, because they were nearly as tall as the fire hydrant they were standing by.
