Aww, poor thing. You are right - this baby needs to be with someone who's going to take care of him the "right" way - proper food, vet visit, etc. I'm praying Jim talks him out of the kitten and brings him home where he will be VERY well taken care of until time for his re-homing. Please keep us posted on this precious bundle of fur!
