Thanks everyone for all the input. My Oakley is my baby and all i'm concerned with is his health and having a pretty coat will be a plus. So I guess the consensus to having a healthy coat entails the following:
besides genetics
1. good food
2. keep him clean (bathe as necessary w/o drying out his skin & hair)
3. use good shampoo & conditioner
4. brush out mats
5. trim his nails, ears, butt, private area
6. trim the ends of hair if breakage and split ends
