Can I ask where in Jersey you are? I will keep a big eye out for Peek. It must be heartbreaking to have lost him. Hopefully someone has found him and we'll be able to get you your pup back.
I think your new pup sounds young. My two little girls were rescue pups and I had them by 8 weeks. The first couple of nights I only had Roxy (the smaller of the two) and while she was good - it was difficult for her. Two days later when her littermate Ruby joined the pack - things got markedly improved. Roxy ate, slept and played with more confidence and (no surprise) didn't act as clingy with me. Now at 5 1/2 months, she still has her moments but again there appears to be a confidence that comes with maturity.
I'm not suggesting you get another pup to keep this once company - just that she may need a little support initially to get comfortable. Sounds like you did the right thing today. Safely tucked away in her crate while you do dishes sounds like the right move!
