x-rays are VERY useful..it will let you know how many pups, so you know when she is done with whelping and there is no risk of one more in there with a possible problem that you didn't know about until it is too late. You will also be able to measure skull sizes and pelvic capacity to determine if free whelping is possible or a C-section will be required.
