Depends on the ends of the hair. Hair ends tend to get dry and brittle and even may split or break (same as human hair). Trimming slightly may do some good. But, since hair grows from the root and not the end, it will not stimulate more hair growth.

Good hair depends on the genetics. Does your dog have a true silk coat? Your wooly/cotton coats will be more faster growing than your silk coat.

From there, diet and shampoos help to keep the skin moisturized and healthy.
