I trim the hair on the bottoms of their feet so they can get better traction on the hardwood floors. I just trim the long hair away from the pads. I have found the best time for me to do this is when they are sleepy and ready for a nap. They curl up next to me anyway, so I just trim away while they snooze. I usually trim their nails after a bath. The nails are softer then and it seems to be easier. I just snip the pointy ends off- I'm afraid to cut too much...
