You should already be feeding them dry puppy food moistened with water or esbilac (at 5 weeks I think water is just fine) and adding a small amount of canned (if it makes you feel better). Make it a creamy soupy texture that they can lap up until they get the hang of it and then over the next fews weeks or so gradually lessen the amount of water. I usually put the dry puppy food in a food processor and turn it into a powder for easy mixing, but I also start at just under 4 weeks. As soon as they start eating on their own, Mom will start eating less and her milk will slowly dry up. I also leave out a bowl of dry puppy food and this tells me when they are able to eat the stuff right from the bag.
