The clicker works. You don't have to use a clicker, any marker word (like YES) works. Just teach him if he runs to his crate/spot when the doorbell rings, he gets a treat. Be consistent and he'll get it! It's an easy "trick" he doesn't have to do anything except run to a spot and he gets food. Sounds like a good deal to me. You can work on a down/stay too, making him stay there longer and longer if you want.
