Do a search under "nail trimming" and you will find lots of threads here. One of the threads included a website link that has photos demonstrating how to tell where to cut.
IMO 1/4" is way too much to cut at one time. With Sissy, I can barely trim and she will bleed. I just began using a nail tool that is battery operated that files them, rather than cutting. She is HORRIBLE for nail trimming - she won't hold still at all and screams like she is being killed (we've tried wrapping her in a towel and everything else we can think of - boy can she squirm and she is very strong for her little body size!). She will actually hold still and doesn't even whine for the filing process. Good luck.
