In many areas, there are bounties on coyotes. If they get over populated with little food, they will kill cattle, chickens, you name it. For rural Americans whose income may depend on livestock/chickens/etc, the coyotes must be managed. We have a friend with a truck garden and the coyotes (among other critters) will get in the garden and eat the watermelons, tomatoes, etc.

Here in Austin, at the edge of town, a friend of my was walking his 2 dogs and a coyote came and grabbed one of the dogs from right in front of him and killed it. They did not find the dog, the coyote took it off to eat it.

They can be quite a menace. Be careful. On the other hand, I have lived in the country (not now though) and you just learn to live with them and the precautions to take.
