It really may be what they call "reverse sneezing." I always thought it seemed more like some sort of a cough - hacking -spasm attack. But anyway, this is so common with small dogs. All three of mine do it. My little Bichon does this every night when I get home from work --- he just gets so excited and that's when it happens. It lasts about 30 seconds or so - and then it's over. It is perfectly harmless...absolutely nothing to worry about. You'll learn this (and so will your dog) after they have done it a couple hundred times.
