Litter box????? I have a 10-week-old named Zachary. I have decided to train him to a litter box and so have a dog litter box and dog litter. Zach goes pee and poop in the litter box although he does have accidents, but that's usually because I wandered off to tend to something else and didn't catch him getting ready to assume the position. He's also way too young to expect him to not have accidents. I decided not to use potty pads because they feel too much like carpeting, blankets and such.....
When I have to leave I crate Zach and he does beautifully in the crate although if I'm gone too long he will have an accident, so I try to limit my time away to only a couple of hours. If he hasn't pooped in a while, I'll try to make him poop before I leave by putting him in the litter box and wiping his hiney with a warm, wet paper towel. Most of the time I can get him to poop on my schedule.
When he's not playing with me on the floor, he plays in a rubbermaid-like tub that has toys in it. He does pretty well in the playpen but will have accidents if I'm not paying attention. I work part-time and get to take him to work (something I know not very many people can do) and have another playpen and litter box in my office.
The litter box is actually pretty convenient especially since I'm not fond of having to go outside in the middle of the night. Until I have him completely trained to the box, I won't let him go outside unless we're out walking which we won't be doing until he's had all of his shots.
So, in a nutshell, I keep a really close eye on Zach and use the litter box exclusively for pottying. He does very well with the box and I'm really pleased so far with the results. The box doesn't smell and I clean up the poop as soon as he goes (I have plastic bags right next to the box). |
