I honestly don't think its going to hurt the cat. We are actually in the same situation, took in a cat and well it actually would only eat my dog's food at first now it is eating cat food too. I think eventually it will probably start eating only cat food, especially if its like you said and its just eating b/c it thinks it might not get to eat later. It will eventually learn that you are going to feed it and calm down. I really think eventually the cat will start to prefer the cat food anyway, this is how it was in our case, I think its just tastier for them. Its been a couple weeks now and the cat we have will really only eat cat food.
