If he is going into the crate to poop, then evidently he thinks that is the place to poop. He just isn't getting the message. Buy a smaller crate, one that fit him perfectly with no room to spare. If the crate is big enough for him to move around it will stimulate the urge to poop.
Or leave the door off the crate and put a pee pad next to it, and confine him to a small area like a bathroom or laundry room.
When what you are trying dioesn't work, then try somethine else cause evidently he is not getting it. It's all about communication, you have to figure out what he understands.
Why is he allowed to sleep with you sometimes and other times not?
If anyone had a quick easy training method, they would be a billionaire.
You could also try regulating when he eats, that might make him more regular when he poops.
