They probably kept him for so long because to do a tooth extraction the pup has to be given anasthesia, and it is a good medical practice to keep a patient for a couple hours after any surgical procedure be it a human or a dog. I found it comforting that they kept Google for a few hours after his neutering & tooth extraction. He had 13 teeth removed! When I called at noon to check in on him the staff said "we close at 7, the later you can come the better!" and I took that as a sign that they wanted to ensure he was stable and able to go home. They also trimmed his nails short, and I took that as a favor because it's so hard to keep him still long enough for nail trimming that I can only do one paw at a time!
