Toto gets outside quite a bit but not on the ground. We always carry her ... I'm so afraid of her getting something from the ground. When I take her for walks on her leash, it's always on the sidewalk. We have an enclosed courtyard and I can leave the door open with the sliding screen open enough for her to go out there when she chooses [it's concrete & stucco]. We take her everywhere we go [rules permitting]. We do have to find an exercise option for her as she is about 2 lbs. overweight.
