Don't feel dumb....I know good and well I've read the 4-7 standard before too, so at one time that standard must have existed, at least unofficially. Probably back in the day when they thought there was NO WAY that an adult dog could weigh less than four lbs.

As for your original question....my uneducated guess....maybe the 3.5 studs are sometimes to counterbalance using the larger dams (which is safer for health reasons)
