I am so sorry for your loss. I think it would work out good. I got Cali at 9 weeks last year and Maya was a 8 1/2 year old grumpy loner pomeranian. I worried that it would be too much for her but it has been great. Maya has become much more friendly, wants to come up on the bed a lot something she never use to do and runs to kids and people now instead of going nuts at them. She puts up with a lot from Cali but lets her know when she's had enough or doesn't want to be bothered. I have never had any problems with Maya hurting Cali even though Maya is 13 lbs and Cali was 1 lb when I got her. It's been almost a year since I got Cali and everyday they seem closer.
I think it would be good for you and Toby. Good luck!
