Well, I don't know about the cartilage thing, but as far as getting the ears to stand up, hsve you tried taping them? My Schatzi's ears wer shaved 1/2 way down and were still floppy for a week until I took some masking tape while she was sleeping and taped the ears up... it worked like a charm, and her ears are so adorable and standing straight up now. She was 12 weeks old when I did this.
