Sorry I didn't see your not new to YT, lol. There are sypmtoms that will alert you to a possible collapsed trachea, but to answer your question regarding not knowing they have it until they have it is, you will notice the symtoms of the classic honking, shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, these normally increase with excitement or physical exertion. Later stages of this can cause inlargement of the heart, paleness or blueness of the gums and tongue.
