Yeah, pounds are way less strict, but that's a double edged sword. Private rescues can/will give you MUCH better insight into the history and personality/temperament of an animal, so that there isn't as much risk of ending up with a pet that is a bad fit for your home.

I've known people who have gotten GREAT pets from pounds, but I'm personally leary. (Esp. having small kids)
