What about an x-pen? Do you have room?
Also, I have a dog sitter who comes in on the days that I'll be gone for more than 4-5 hours and spends an hour with my dogs. Some weeks I only need her once, others (like this week) I need to be out almost everyday. It's not ideal, but it's better than them being alone all day.
