I use Photoshop Elements 2 to make Avatars - and really like it - I've been sending out a Ulead Program to people and they seem to be really doing well with making their own avatars with this program -
If you need some help cropping pictures I can do it for you...this thread has a free online cropping site you can use also -

MOST photo editing programs offer a crop tool - that really helps to make the picture easier too see - just crop out the background and save at the right size....75 or 125 pixels - and your yorkies face will show up much better than just sizing a regular picture.
