Sounds like your new trainer doesn't understand clicker training very well.
A clicker is used only when introducing a new behavior. You use it to mark the exact second that they get the behavior right. Once the behavior is learned, you no longer need to mark it with a clicker. Praise (with or without a treat) is sufficient.
