Never noticed the tomato - definitely something to think about - I found this little bit about why it's put in some dog foods.

The tomato has been around for centuries. Once thought to be a vegetable, it was eventually dogscovered to be a fruit. Tomato products, specifically tomato pastes and tomato purees, contain a naturally occurring antioxidant called Lycopene. Lycopene has the ability to neutralize free-radicals before these dangerous chemicals can cause the cells permanent damage.

If you grow tomatoes in your home garden, be sure to keep your dog away from the leaves and stems. They are potentially toxic. The fruit, however, is an excellent source of soluble fiber, a necessary part of every dog's diet. Plus, it's pawsitively packed full of nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin A, and lycopene. All of which are helpful in keeping your hound healthy. And that's something to howl about.
