Embarassed Should a puppy be dewormed?

Our breeder treated our puppy with some type of deworming medicine called Panacur before we brought her home at 12 weeks. When we told her that the vet had given her some oral deworming medicine at her first checkup at 12 weeks she was not happy. She said that was "poison" to the puppies and they didn't need any deworming medicine unless a stool sample showed worms. She checked a stool sample sometime before we got her, but we didn't have it checked at 12 wks...but will at 16 weeks. So...can the deworming medicine be harmful to the puppies and how often do they need it? The vet said something like every month. Should we take the breeder's advice and don't get the deworming medicine?
