I think people should take their pups with them whenever they can - and make other arrangements when they can't. I hate to see people not go on trips and vacations because they have pets. I think this is a sacrifice that we really don't need to make most of the time.
Go on your trip - take your pup - and have fun.
PS: My dogs don't ride in the car a lot - but always want to go - then they start acting up a little - but if we continue on with our drive, they soon settle down and begin taking long naps. And, of course, they love it when we stop and they can get out and walk and go to the bathroom, etc.
