If the steps help him get in your bed while you are away, I would keep them. I bet one day soon he'll learn to go down them. You could try placing his favorite treat on the floor or on the bottom step and coax him to come down them. Also, does he like to go "bye bye" or go on a "walk" or anything like that? You could make him walk up the stairs to get on the couch and tell him he's going "bye bye" or on a "walk" or getting a "treat." See if he'll go down them then! Or you can sit at the bottom of the stairs and call him and really praise him if he actually does walk down them.

I think the stairs are a good investment and I think with a little work that he will eventually learn to go down them.
