Years ago our neighbor lost their poodle and they did exactly what you suggested, by going through the neighborhood calling his name real loud, and it turnd out that their poodle was in a home within their neighborhood, when they recognized his bark they were able to get him back They have terrific hearing and so this is an excellent suggestion.
