Traditionally it goes on the third finger on your left hand (finger next to your pinky). The day you get married, you switch the engagement ring to your right hand (same finger) so your wedding band can go on the left hand. After you are married, you take the engagement ring off and place it on your left hand again. This way the wedding band is close to your heart.
Now, different cultures do it differently. Some leave the engagement ring close to the heart because that's the ring they received first. My mom actually wore it this way because she figured, if one were to fall off, she didn't want it to be the diamond engagement ring! LOL
