I just had a few questions though, for all you with more than one Yorkie:
I read once that they can kill each other if left alone . Seriously?
Is it true the older one will teach the younger to go to the bathroom outside?
How hard is it to take two dogs places with you, vs just the one? And most importantly, is it worth it?
Thanks in advance for your input. |
Oh my gosh...I know EXACTLY how you feel!!!!! We got Hobbs for Christmas from my parents and couldn't ask for anything more in a pet companion. He is perfect for us. Hobbs absolutely LOVES playing with other animals, and he also would get really lonely when we left him alone. So, we seriously considered getting another one so Hobbs would have a little playmate while we went to work everyday. The trick was that Hobbs was just so perfect that we wanted one as close to him as possible. We toyed with the idea of mating him and keeping one of his puppies, but decided against that. So, we called the breeder from whom we got Hobbs and asked her if Hobbs' same parents would be having another litter ever. She said that Hobbs' same parents were actually pregnant with another litter that were due in May! So, we told her that we DEFINATELY wanted one from that litter. But as time drew closer, we were really apprehensive about messing up something really good that we had with Hobbs. I was worried that I wouldn't love the second yorkie as much as Hobbs. But, we got our second one anyway....her name is Hootie and we got her 3 weeks ago. It took a little while for Hobbs to warm up to her. But, after about a week and a half, they are having the very best time! I am SO glad that we decided to get another one. Hobbs is really enjoying having the playmate and everything up to this point is perfect.
Now, to answer your questions from my experiences:
At first you will really need to monitor the playing time of the new puppy and your older yorkie. ALso, when you are gone, you will need to confine the new puppy in an area that is not accessible to your older yorkie. I still keep my 2 separated while we're gone, but now they play pretty well together without too much supervision.
Hobbs has been a tremendous help at showing Hootie not only how to go potty outside, but do other things as well. Sometimes it is hard to get a new puppy to eat...but whenever Hobbs eats, Hootie eats...whenever Hobbs goes potty outside, Hootie does, too. The second one is definately easier to train in all aspects bc the older one does help out.
As far as taking both of them with you places, you really won't need to as much bc you won't feel guilty leaving them at home anymore bc they will keep each other company. When you do take both of them places, it really isn't hard bc they are so small anyway. You could train the puppy to ride in a crate when you're in the car...then you won't have to worry about both of them bounding around the car.
Sorry my post is so long, but I felt that exact same way you do now before we got our 2nd one. If you have any questions for me about my experiences, please feel free to PM me!
Someone once told me that yorkies are like Lays Potato Chips....you can't have just one!!! Now I know from experience that this is true! Go for it! Get your new puppy! But the main thing to remember is that when you get your new one, by all means don't neglect the older dog. You will have to show the older dog more attention and love than you ever have until he is used to the new puppy.
