You can, father to daughter and mother to son. What Pat is talking about is when you do that most likely you are making the faults each have worse. If you have a dog with a slightly bad bite and breed him back to his daughter who also has a bad bite, you could end up with a puppy with a seriously bad bite. Or possibly some other kind of deformity.
I bought my dogs with the intention of out breeding but when Pirogue kept getting so big and I couldn't find a female his size, I decided to do something about it myself. It took me over a year to find one that is suitable and he just kept growing until he was 18mo.
