This is how we learned in school; you have to have treats, a handful. Bend down in front of your dog (short leash) begin by showing the treats, getting the dog interested, take a step, hopefully the dog follows you, let dog have a treat. Repeat, taking a few steps, giving treat. Vary the number of steps before giving treat or dog will learn every third step or so to stop for a treat. For our small dogs it's a pain in the back, all of that bending over, it does work though. Ruby did this one better than sit and we are still working on the potty training.
