I'm getting bells for my mom's house because that is where Loki visits the most (yeah she calls herself Grandma). Otherwise he just goes and stands by the door. So if we are visiting someone for a few hours I just watch him.

For longer stays - we take the bells. They hang on a suction cup or on the door knob.

If you are going to a new place, where your dog might not know where to go - just show them 3 or 4 times when you get there. GO to the door, clip the leash on or whatever and say GO OUTSIDE! and then take them out to potty. Repeat a few times and they'll be like "OH ok so I go to this door and someone lets me out" I've found that Loki remembers even if he only goes to the in-laws twice a year. But, he is pretty good at adapting because he goes everywhere with us.
