I think it has something to do with hormone levels in both people and dogs. I know that nursing causes release of a specific hormone that shrinks the uterus and makes Moms more maternal. It is also more common for C-section Moms to not adapt easily to motherhood so maybe not going through the natural birthing process creates an improper hormonal balance.

Traumatic or stressful births also seem to be related to Moms not immediately accepting their babies.
