I am far from an expert but what helps my girls long hair is keeping it clean... using quality shampoos and light oil. My girls are little tomboys and get pretty dirty sometimes - so when they're dirty - they get a bath.
I also used to sit and just brush them at night - it relaxes them and they'd always wake up pretty lol
