Hummmm...I am going to steam clean my carpets, too, once I get this new baby potty trained. I am glad you started this thread so I will know what to do when that time comes for me! Personally, I thought that when you immediately clean it up after they "go," that that is all you need to do and all you can do until you steam clean. Then steam cleaning and/or shampooing the carpet will take care of the nitty gritty stuff. I know that when you steam clean that there is a vaccum attached to the steamer. So, I think that the steam would loosen all the stains and the vaccum sucks them up and away. I don't really see how a steam cleaner could "spread" the pee. But, I very well could be mistaken

P.S. -- I'm scared to take a black light to my carpet, too! Luckily I live in an apartment temporarily, so my permanent residence will hopefully be free of potty stains! (That is, at least until we decide to get another puppy )
