Default [News] Does the Pet Groom Pro Ionic Brush Really Work?

Does It Really Do That? Pet Groom Pro 5/05/05

Do you really love your pet? Then you need the Pet Groom Pro, at least that's what the infomercial says. The Pet Groom Pro is an ionic brush that gives your pet the equivalent of a waterless bath. But Does It Really Do That? Liz Crenshaw is here to answer the question.

Now you can make your home more livable and your pet more lovable, at least that's what the Pet Groom Pro infomercial promises. But does it really do that? Let's find out.

Infomercial
Do you love your pet? Then treat him like one of the family with the Pet Groom Pro, the ionic breakthrough in pet care.

Crenshaw
IT MAY LOOK LIKE A SIMPLE BRUSH, BUT THE PET GROOM PRO SAYS IT'S A LOT MORE. THE BRUSH CLAIMS TO BATHE YOUR PET IN CLEANSING IONS INSTEAD OF SOAP AND WATER, IN EFFECT, GIVING IT A WATERLESS BATH. HOW'S IT DO THAT?

Infomercial
It's remarkable ionic grooming power emits millions of cleansing ions that neutralize odor-causing bacteria and impurities as you brush.

Crenshaw
SO WE TOOK THE PET GROOM PRO AND ITS INFOMERCIAL TO SARAH PRESTEMON'S HOUSE. SHE HAD SEEN THE INFOMERCIAL ON TV AND THOUGHT THE BRUSH WOULD MAKE LIFE WITH HER 13-YEAR OLD YORKSHIRE TERRIER, LADYBUG, A LOT EASIER.

THE PET GROOM PRO COST US $14.99 PLUS $5.99 SHIPPING, HOWEVER FOR THAT PRICE WE'RE GETTING A DEVICE THAT CLEANS OUR PET OF ODORS, ALLERGENS AND DANDER AND CLEANS UP IN A SNAP

Prestemon & Crenshaw
BUT DOES IT REALLY DO THAT?

Crenshaw
Sarah, we just sort of snapped this 9-volt in there. And then click it on, there's a little green light.

Sarah Prestemon. Germantown, MD
Okay.

Crenshaw
Okay. And it basically says all we have to do is for full effect in this just gently brush your pet with a slow, steady brush stroke, regular brushing for 5 minutes a day will help keep your pet clean and smelling fresh. That is pretty much it until we have to clean the brush.

Prestemon
Okay, let's see if it makes her clean and fresh.

Crenshaw
NOW THE PET GROOM PRO IS SILENT AND VIBRATION-FREE AS YOU OPERATE IT. SARAH FOUND IT QUITE EASY TO USE.

Prestemon
And slow and steady and she seems to like this.

Crenshaw
Not bothering her?

Prestemon
Not bothering her at all.

Crenshaw
THE PET GROOM PRO INFOMERCIAL MAKES A BIG SELLING POINT ABOUT HOW WELL IT COLLECTS PET HAIR.

Informercial
Odors, allergens, dander and shedding off your pet and out of your house.

Crenshaw
IN OUR LITTLE EXPERIMENT, SARAH THOUGHT IT DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB TOO.

So Sarah, is it catching Ladybug's hair?

Prestemon
It seems to be. There seems to be some hair on there.

Crenshaw
AND THE BRUSH ALSO CLAIMS TO BE SUPERIOR WHEN IT COMES TO CLEANING.

Prestemon
The patented face plate catches it all like a magnet and it cleans off in a snap.

Crenshaw
Now Sarah, to clean this, all we're supposed to do is pop this little plate off and dump this in the trash.

Prestemon
Right, that's what I understand too.

Crenshaw
Give it a shot?

Prestemon
Okay

Crenshaw
All right (takes off face plate). Wow, that's easy enough.

Prestemon
Very easy.

Crenshaw
BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE "BATHING YOUR PET," PART OF THE INFOMERCIAL, SARAH WAS A LITTLE LESS ENTHUSIASTIC.

Is it a waterless bath for Ladybug?

Prestemon
I don't think so.

Crenshaw
How would you describe it?

Prestemon
I would describe it as a good grooming tool, but not a bathing tool.

Crenshaw
Do you think she smells better after this grooming?

Prestemon
A little bit, but she doesn't smell like she's had a full water bath.

Crenshaw
PET GROOM PRO TELLS US THE PHRASE "BATHES YOUR PET IN CLEANSING IONS" IS JUST A METAPHOR. IT SAYS THE EFFECT OF USING IONS INSTEAD OF PERFUMED SOAP AND WATER WILL BE DIFFERENT, HOWEVER THE END RESULT IS YOUR PET WILL BE ODOR AND ALLERGEN FREE. BUT SARAH PRESTEMON IS STILL NOT SOLD ON THE PRODUCT.

Crenshaw
So the Pet Groom Pro-Two, does it really do that?

Prestemon
Not entirely.

Crenshaw
Not entirely. And for $21 would you buy it?

Prestemon
I don't think I would.
