Brownie's never had the hair pulled from her ears and has never had any problems. But I heard that if hair isn't pulled, it could cause problems, like ear mites that stick to the hair inside and you have to take medication or drops.
As for the beach, I took Brownie there once and she hated it, all the sand getting into her coat and she refused to go in the water.
She had lots of toys, food and water, but she just sat in the shade the whole time panting. We left after about 2 hours.....
