It's unusual for a dog to become epileptic at that age...usually that shows up at a much younger age but it wasn't impossible. They put her on phenobarbital. She had a few more episodes over the next 2 years but I know the phenobarbital helped because after they "Upped" her dose they stopped. We lost Jasmine this year due to other age related problems....not the seizures.....and now have a very busy little Yorkie named Taylor. Has your vet suggested phenobarbital? The seizure episodes are very scary and they do lose their coordination and vision until they come out of the seizure. Good luck.
Phenobarb should only be given if the dog has had more then one or two seizures in a short period of time or the seizure has lasted more then a couple minutes. You can't really be sure what is causing seizures in an older dog. Tests would have to be run, scans done, x-rays done, etc to make sure its nothing more serious before calling it epilepsy and prescribing phenobarb.
