Then you can't crate train right now. Try an x-pen with a pad at one end and her crate at the other. You can't leave them in the crate longer than they can hold it. If she can make it 4 hours, can someone let her out at lunch? A neighbor? A kid home for the summer? Putting the pad in the crate just teaches them it's OK to go in the crate. If you just plan on using it for containment, and will always have a pad available, then I guess it's OK. But the whole point of crate training is so that they DO NOT soil their crate.
