 I'm trying the same thing
I have the same problem...BAD winters and I don't like him out at night. I am trying to teach him to go outside when I am home unless I put something down. Still working on that. I've trained him on command to pee and poo so if I have a pee pad in the bathroom and say "pee" or whatever...he goes. I am planning on switching to the pup head dog toilet because the pee pads are just way too expensive with how many I go through and I dont' see how they separate what a pee pad is from what towel or bathmat is.
